What is the Sports Buddies Program?

The Sports Buddies program is changing the way at-risk children grow up in East Tennessee. The program pairs disadvantaged children with adult mentors that have a shared interest in sports. Mentors help children build confidence, enjoy new experiences and learn life skills through the fun of sports. The goal of the Sports Buddies program is to provide mentors for East Tennessee boys waiting to be matched with a Big Brother.

Who can be a Sports Buddy?

Anyone can be a Sports Buddy, but we’re especially looking for volunteers who have active lifestyles and who can be positive role models for boys on our waiting list.

How does it work?

All you have to spend is time; Big Brothers Big Sisters provides the rest! As a Sports Buddy volunteer, mentors will be given free tickets to everything from University of Tennessee athletics to Tennessee Smokies baseball to Ice Bears hockey games. Big Brothers Big Sisters also plans sports outings such as basketball games, Frisbee golf tournaments and flag football games. And Sports Buddies participants have the chance to go on behind-the-scenes tours of area sports complexes, participate in sports camps and meet local sports heroes.

How can I get involved?

You can call (865) 523-2179 to sign up for a volunteer orientation. Or, you or your company can provide sponsorship dollars or tickets to sporting events, plan sporting activities for the children and mentors or invite Big Brothers Big Sisters to recruit Sports Buddies within your organization.
